COC Package Pickup & Whistler Training
Friday, August 1st
10am - 5:30pm
COC Package Pickup
Package pickup will be at Passiv Haus in Lost Lake park, from 10am - 5:30pm on Friday August 1st.
UPDATE Aug 1st: Package pickup will also be available at the arena of each event. Sorry - we didn't mention that before.
Passiv Haus is a short walk from Whistler Village. If you are driving we recommend you park in Day Lot 5. See the overview map for more detail.
There is a small coffee shop in Passiv Haus where you can buy good coffee, smoothies, and other drinks, sandwiches, and ice creams.
Don't forget to bring everyone with you to sign waivers!
Training
Two training maps will be available in Whistler, so you can get acclimatized to the local forests. These are "self-service" trainings with no volunteers onsite. There will be ribbons hung in the terrain with control numbers written on them. A course will be provided but you can do any of the controls in any order.
We recommend that you spend a bit of time on the Lost Lake map when you pick up your race package then head over to Nester's Hill.
Lost Lake
ISOM, 1:7,500, 4m contours
Middle, Long distance and Relay training. This training will give you a good taste of the Whistler forests, some feeling for the type of rock features you will encounter in Whistler races, and a chance to stretch your legs. Keep in mind this is not a "model event" as the mapping style is quite different from the competition maps. In particular, the rock features tend to be "over mapped" on the Lost Lake map with many rock features shown that will not be large enough to be included in the competition maps at One Duck (Middle) and Black Magic (Long). Also the Middle & Long distance maps have more accurate contours thanks to having Lidar data available. However the terrain is somewhat similar to the Middle distance terrain. And of course you owe it to your relay team to spend at least a few moments in the Lost Lake forest getting used to the complex trail system in preparation for the Club Relay on Tuesday.
Start/finish: Conveniently the Lost Lake training starts & finishes at Passiv Haus.
Nester's Hill
ISSOM, 1:4,000, 2.5m contours.
Mapped: Magnus Johansson, 2005, with updates 2011.
A small, really fun forest Sprint map. Not at all relevant to the COC Sprint (which is an urban sprint). The terrain is somewhat similar to the Middle distance terrain, and has a similar mapping style (since both were mapped by Magnus). It is super cool forest with nice rock features. A real joy to run in this wonderful bit of Whistler.
Tip: this course has quite a lot of climb out of the start. Take a more mellow approach by skipping the first four controls and jogging up to control 5 for your start.
Start/finish: Myrtle Philip school, on Lorimer Road approximately 1km west of Highway 99.
