MAP INFO
Lost Lake
ISOM
Scale: 1:5,000
Contour Interval: 4 m
Size: 8.5" X 14"
Mapped: Lehel Fenyoe, 2010
Small expansion: Magnus Johansson & Remo Madella, 2014
Elevation: 650m (approx)
Note that this area is mapped at 1:7,500 but for this race we are printing at 1:5,000 with symbols not enlarged. This means there is more space between the symbols and so it makes the closely-packed trails a lot easier to read on the map.
TERRAIN DESCRIPTION
A fun relay race in a challenging and rugged parkland with dense trail network. There will be plenty of route choice. There is considerable climb. Forest is variable - some sections of high speed and high visibility, other sections of dense, slow running. Lots of trails of all sizes twist throughout the park - but they rarely go straight! Fast running on the trails, with physically demanding climb.
OFFICIALS
Course planners: Magnus Johansson, Adrian Zissos

Each runner will have a certain handicap point value. Points values are based on their age as of 31st December this year as in the table below. Add up all three runners' point values to determine the team's category.
There will be four categories: 0-2 point reams, 3-5 point teams, 6-8 point teams, and 9+ point teams.
Age | Male | Female |
15-16 | 2 | 2 |
17-20 | 1 | 2 |
21-34 | 0 | 1 |
35-49 | 1 | 3 |
50-59 | 2 | 4 |
60-69 | 3 | 5 |
70 & over | 5 | 6 |
Kids' race
This relay is not suitable for children 14 years old and under. For these young stars we will hold a mass-start race at 10:00am. There will be two courses based on the regular age groups. The courses will be in the vicinity of the beach and will allow for lots of cheering.
Non-relay option
If you really, absolutely, definitely don't want to take part in the relay (which would be a tragic decision ;-) we will have a number of extra Leg 1 maps prepared. Report to the special area close to the start line at 9:50am. You will be part of the mass start of Leg 1 runners - what fun!!
Relay tips - mass starts
To prepare for the chaos of the mass start you must do lots of mental preparation so that you are able to focus on your own navigation and not be distracted by others. To help with this mental preparation, here are two video clips from the absolutely massive Jukola relay ...Video One and Video Two (warning: these take a while to download, but they are worth it).
Relay tips - following
While following is generally frowned upon in orienteering (actually it is quite against the rules), an exception is made for relays. In fact a lot of the fun of running in a relay is being in a "train" - moving together with other runners much faster than you would if you were alone. Just have a little caution - this leg might be forked and you may not both be going to the same next control.
OTHER NOTES
Almost all the trails are heavily used by mountain bikers and walkers. Please watch out and be courteous to all other park users!
